2011 Vortex Extreme Invitational

The hills of Whites Valley, Utah were alive with the sound of large caliber rifles taking aim at over 30 life size silhouette's of big game targets this past Saturday, as competitors from across the region competed in the first ever Vortex Extreme Invitational. Unlike a traditional game of Rifle Golf where shooters travel from station to station riding in Polaris Ranger Crew, for this "extreme" event, the only form of transportation were your feet, and the iron will to hike the grueling 6.5 miles trail.

Vortex Optics, a Wisconsin based optic manufacture sponsored the tournament. "We were looking for an event that pushed the limits of the shooters, we liked what Spirit Ridge offered. The trail was rugged, the targets were incredibly challenging, all in all it made for a great event,” said Paul Kendall spokesman for Vortex Optics.

The Vortex Extreme challenged both endurance and accuracy of the teams. The teams consisted of two teammates. The first leg of the race was a stretch up the Hogs Back, a steep and rocky 2.5 mile hike to the top summit of the mountain. From there the teams picked up the pace to the first shooting station where they had to find the targets, range the targets, steady the aim and fire. A hit on the first shot earned the marksmen an eagle, second shot birdie, fail to hit the shot and you would earn a heavy double bogie. Shooters had the option to play the hole safe by taking a safe par shot which a closer target.

The night before the event Vortex hosted a reception dinner at the Hampton Inn, located in Tremonton Utah. Participants were given a chance to mix and mingle, eat, and develop a game plan. Once morning arrived the gun golfers rose bright and early to begin their hike across Whites Valley.

There were plenty of pre tournament jitters. Starting at the bottom of the mountain, teams waited for the competition to begin by warming up their muscles through stretches and jumping jacks. A shot heard round the mountain began the race. Teams made their way to the beginning station without the help of motorized utilities continuing across the mountain from station to station; a 6.5 mile hike from top to bottom.

Don and Dave, team Wilderness Athlete, flew in from Arizona to participate in the event. After completing the course they commented on the challenge of the hike, "Endurance wise we felt strong, but training at 1,500 feet is a lot different than hiking at 6,000, we were sucking air."

Stations consisted of two holes with hard, easy, and unique shots. Both members of the team were required to shoot either hard or easy shots without prior knowledge of a set distance. They had to determine this distance for themselves.

Along with the required shot each member had to shoot the unique shot in a standing, sitting, or kneeling position depending on which station they were at.

Teams were also given a choice as to whether they wanted to participate in a bonus shot. The bonus shot came in the form of a bell, provided and sponsored by Tremonton local artist, Doug Adams, that when hit, could be heard across the valley. If hit teams would have three points deducted from their final score, but if missed an additional three points were added.

Kevin Orton commented on the difficulty of the course, "It’s a tough course with some tough shots; I saw some of the best riflemen out here miss shots I thought for sure they would hit."

The event tested abilities of participants, not only did they have to hike and hold a steady aim, at each station they were challenged to assemble gear and take down targets in under 12 minutes providing a lifelike hunting experience.

After completing the course Brandon Barney, Outdoor Outfitted said, "It was a humbling experience. It's nothing I've ever done before and was an incredible set up. It’s something I’ll definitely train a little harder for next year."

As teams started to cross the finish line each had a story to tell. All were in awe of the realistic experience even after having heard what Spirit Ridge is all about.

Mark Boardman from Vortex said, “we are blown away, it exceeded any expectations we had."

From beginning to end, marksmen held strong. After 6 miles and 7 hours in the sun they were asking for more. They wanted to shoot another round of rifle golf, which Spirit Ridge was happy to provide.

TOP GUN TOURNAMENT 2011

Spirit Ridge kicked off this season with our invitation-only Top Gun Tournament, featuring 50 of our most-skilled gunmen from last seasons shooters in both the Masters and Classics division. In order to receive an invitation to shoot in the event, shooters must post at least two qualifying scores throughout the regular season. If their score is one of the top 25 within their division, they are given the opportunity to compete in the tournament with a chance to earn a name on the course as well as some serious swag.

Starting bright and early, the masters took to the course making their way around the mountain from hole to hole. They have the opportunity to shoot an Eagle (hole in one), a Birdie (second shot), or if they missed both of those shots, they come to a closer hole and shoot for Par.

After shooting three eagles at station three, Rich Reeder commented on how his first round went, "I feel jittery," he said, after doing a little dance. Thus the effect rifle golf has on some if the greatest marksmen. It strikes excitement in the hearts of men.

When asked how he thought he was doing, Dave Atkinson said, "You know I’m out of the running, but I’m having a good time and that's all that matters."
It may be a competition, but winning isn’t everything, its about the camaraderie that passes through each gunmen as they help one another to shoot their best.

The experience Rifle Golf provides is unique and lifelike. Looking through the scope of a gun and spotting the target brings a feeling of pure exhilaration. Tom Christensen, ace spotter, regrets not getting the chance to shoot the course. "I did a great job spotting, but it’s nothing like pulling the trigger. I'll definitely be out here to shoot the course as soon as I can."

The new facility improvements turned out to be a big hit for returning riflemen. Clark Carlisle said, "It’s nice to ride up to each station and not have the dirt blow back in your face."

The settled gravel was a big improvement compared to the loose dirt, providing a more pleasant experience for this season.

As for the first place winners, both winning for the second year in a row, Eric Murray of the Masters division with a total score of 22, and Clark Moss of the Classics division with a total score of 17. Each won a custom built rifle, courtesy of Brad Stair from Cross Canyon Fire Arms, in any caliber of their choice up to .30 caliber. Each rifle is at price value of $3,800.00. A special thanks goes out to Cross Canyon Fire Arms for donating two incredible pieces of art. Not only did they win incredible prizes, but they have earned themselves bragging rights as this seasons top gunmen.

There were many opportunities to win prizes, money, and a name for yourself at Top Gun through a raffle system, putting money into a cash pot, as well as shooting to be in the thousand yard club. Many went home with amazing prizes not to mention a story to tell. A big thanks goes out to all that participated and we can’t wait to see you out on the course again this season.

Spirit Ridge Rifle Golf is Getting a Facelift

This past month has been packed with action for Spirit Ridge. Not with tournaments per se, but with virtual recognition from national media personnel and putting final touches on all improvements.

Upcoming Events:

Tournaments start this month, with two tournaments in the month of July! The Top Gun Tournament (invitation only) is July 9 for last year’s top Classic and Master shooters. Vortex Extreme Tournament (invitation only) is July 16 bringing the outdoor industry leaders to compete covering the course on foot and timed.
Two new tournaments have been in fruition. One is a Predator’s Only Tournament and the African Safari. More news to come on the specifics of these tournaments.

SRRG in the News

Many of you might have noticed that Spirit Ridge is being recognized by reporters not only from Utah, but also from Louisiana, New Jersey and Washington D.C. to name of a few. What was the big change? SRRG became a member of the Professional Outdoor Media Association (POMA) which has access to all outdoor reporters. We sent one press release to POMA members and within hours our phones were ringing with reporters who wanted to cover our new sport of rifle golf. The NRA news even broadcasted a 10 minute interview with Jeff Petersen, SRRG Communications Director, which they also posted on Youtube. We were also featured on a radio show in Louisiana, the Hook’n UP & Track’n Down radio show with Steve Graf and James Hester.

POMA Day

Because POMA’s annual conference is being held in Ogden, UT this year, SRRG decided to hold a media day out the course. This media day will be Aug 10 and involve any and all media members. Each media member that chooses to come out to the course will be given a first hand walk through of the game and the course. Thus, providing them with the first hand experience to then be able to continue to write featured articles about the new and exciting game of Gun Golf.

New Website Launch

Speaking of websites, a new development in Spirit Ridge’s website is in progress. SRRG 2.0 will launch by July 15 giving a more user-friendly experience with substance. Some perks to the newly developed site will be a leader board to highlight top shooters, an online store to purchase SRRG apparel, a convenient capability to book your tee time online, a community forums for viewers to post rifle golf comments and all the information you need to answer any questions.

IMPORTANT Safety Updates

As the sport becomes more accepted by the general public, we have made the decision that ALL shooters will need to wear eye and ear protection at all times while at the shooting stations. We have also added a Certified Range Safety Master to the course, to help improve the safety of all participants. In an effort to keep the range a fun, yet safe environment guides and SRRG personnel will be on the look out for any safety violations. A simple reminder will be given when a safety rule is violated. Repeated breakage of safety rules may result in being asked to leave the course. We have had an enjoyable time over the past 5 years and want to continue to see safety excellence. As loyal participants please keep safety first while out on the course.

New Driving Range

Want a great way to dial things in before hitting the rifle golf course? Try out the newly developed driving range. Close to the club house, the driving range will give gunmen a chance to practice their skills before hitting the course. The range will distance anywhere from 1 to 500 yards giving time to warm up your skills. With the ability to set up targets as far as 1000 + yards. If you don’t have time to shoot a full round of rifle golf, the driving range can give you a “quick fix.”

Facility Updates

Spirit Ridge is excited about this season’s new additions to its course. In order to create a better experience for all, we have incorporated gravel around all the shooting stations as well as a water truck to keep the dust from flying, high-definition target maps, four Polaris Ranger Crews, all making it easier to get around. We also have new and improved target systems.

Tournaments and Dates

TOP GUN TOURNAMENT (Invitation Only - July 9^th) - Our annual Top Gun Tournament is a great way to start the season. This is an invitation only event. Shooters were determined by posting two qualifying scores; we then took the average of those scores to determine the invite list. This year’s shooters will be competing for a custom made rifle from Cross Canyon Fire Arms. The contestants are definitely sharp shooters! The competition will feature two divisions, the classic and the masters. There will be a first, second and third place prize. Even if you are not one of the guys competing, this is a great event to come on out and watch. Hope to see you soon!

VORTEX EXTREME (Invitation Only - July 16^th) – For the first time, SRRG and Vortex are teaming up to present The Vortex Extreme shooting competition, bringing a new style of gun golf to Spirit Ridge. We have invited many outdoor industry leaders to send their top shooters to come and compete for the ultimate bragging rights. This tournament will challenge both endurance and marksmanship. Instead of riding an OHV to each station and taking time to set up each shot, contestants will have to travel the course on foot and will be timed on how fast they can cross the finish line. The teams will travel nearly seven miles, stopping at four different stations.

The general public is welcome to attend and witness this exhilarating tournament. The tournament starts at 6:00 a.m. and will continue throughout the day or until the last team finishes the race. There will be food and beverages to purchase. Come witness one of the most extreme events to hit the shooting industry!

OPEN INVITATION TOURNAMENTS – Beginning in August we will begin hosting Open Invitation Tournaments. Participation is on a first come first serve bases. Prizes for these tournaments include a variety of gear from Vortex, gift cards from Sportsman Warehouse and many other unique prizes. Don’t forget that in order to be eligible to compete in next year’s Top Gun Tournament you have to post two qualifying scores. The tournaments are a great way to get your scores on the board. You can also come out on non tournament days to post qualifying scores.

The Game Itself Is Just Newsworthy!

Spirit Ridge Rifle Golf continuously receives recognition for the uniqueness of the sport and its incredible location. This month Christian Arms Hunting Illustrated Magazine wrote an amazing article capturing the detail the sport deserves.

The author of the article, Tom Austin, wrote, “After a short drive up Interstate-15, I soon found myself at Spirit Ridge overlooking an amazing, vivid, life-like, selection of black silhouette animal targets with bright white, highly visible gongs in lace of their vitals. The targets were nestled among hip-high Western sagebrush, choked with reddish-brown foxtail chess and green cheat-grass. Just like in practical hunting scenarios, some targets say level with the solid shooting benches as well as several uphill and downhill angles to factor into the shot. I shifted the Predator and other shooting paraphernalia from the Rhino to a shooting bench and began to shoot the course.”

Top Gun Finalists

Last year was an incredible season! We saw many old friends along with a few new ones. As a way to create a little friendly competition amongst our league, we would like to announce last year’s top shooters who are now eligible to compete in this season’s Top Gun tournament. As a reminder, one of the main requirements of Top Gun is the shooter had to post at least (2) qualifying scores throughout the previous season. If we do not have enough top scores who posted two scores we then go to the highest single scores.

Hunting Expo

The Hunting Expo was a definite hit this year. We were thrilled to see many "veterans" to SRRG as well as new faces, and no they were not all men, we had countless women and children stop by our booth who are just as excited as the men to see it swing and hear it ping!!

At the expo, we posted the dates of finalized tournaments for the coming season.

Along with these tournaments, we will be hosting a youth tournament and a women tournament. The dates will be finalized within the coming months.

Spirit Ridge is gaining publicity through its Sportsman Warehouse partnership. On January 15th the new Sportsman's News DVD will hit check stands which contains a 15 minute profile story on Spirit Ridge Rifle Golf.

Jeremy Sage, the regional director, visited Spirit Ridge with his camera man, Mike Demming to capture the atmosphere, landscape, rules and enjoyment of the sport rifle golf. After a half-day visit Sage was fascinated with the quality of the course and the next-to-real-life-hunting experience he received.“The confidence that a guy can gain from coming out here and shooting,” Sage said “Actually engaging these targets at unknown ranges or different ranges, using his own equipment and making hits on vital-size targets. This really gives a guy confidence to go out there when hunting season comes around and make a shot on that 300 yard bull.”

2011 Hunting Expo Feb. 3-6 in SLC

Spirit Ridge will have a booth at the Hunting Expo, Feb. 3-6, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the Salt Palace Convention Center, 100 S West Temple, SLC.

Safari Tournament Results

Burrrr the tournament was cold, but Mike Norman left boiling with excitement. The men’s shooting skills were put to the task. Their situation couldn’t have been more realistic. The targets were located at various slopes, distances and angles, but the biggest challenge was fighting from shivering in the cold and reading the wind changes.

“This was identical to hunting in a real live situation,” Brian ___ said. “This helps you prepare for hunting more than anything.”

Although it was a tough shootout, men came back to a warm and delicious African meal, raffles and the announcement of the prize winner.

There we were, sitting in the club house, huddling by the heater to keep warm. We had just finished the raffle drawing and all men were anticipating who was going to win the African Safari hunt. Every man had an equal chance of winning and no one knew their final score, so the tension was high. Then they heard the announcement…

African Safari Tournament :: Good Odds

From the looks of our blog, many of you had a very successful hunting season. We always love to hear that you improved your shot due to shooting rounds at SRRG, but even more we love to share in your excitement of shooting wall-worthy trophies.

Speaking of success, we are excited to be hosting the upcoming Safari Tournament. Everyone who enters is going to have a chance to win, no matter how many times you have been to SRRG or what division you shoot. Your chance of winning some type of prize is very high, even if it is not the $8,000 hunt. Second place receives a $600 Sheep tag on the Goring Ranch, 3rd place receives a Vortex scope, over a $400 dollar value, and fourth place receives a $150 Sportsman’s Warehouse Gift Card.

The three top scores won’t be the only ones with prizes. Each contestant receives two complimentary raffle tickets which go to the biggest raffle we have had yet. The prizes will include over $600 of Sportsman Warehouse outdoor gear and certificates.

In addition to the tournament prizes, we will also be running side pots. For those that don’t know what this is all about let’s just say it is a great way to make extra money on the day based off a couple shots versus your entire score. Many a participant has walked away with a few extra dollars in his pocket from this unique tournament feature.

Let me also put to rest some of your concerns.

What if I haven’t been to the course as many times as other competitors? This does not matter. We are changing the course shots to make it fair for everyone. We are adding different targets, in different locations, with different size plates.

Will I be at a disadvantage if I am a Classic shooter competing against Master shooters? No, you will not be at a disadvantage. To make this fair we have set up all the targets within classic shooters distance, 75-500 yards. We may even throw in a few timed stations.

If I don’t win the tournament I am out $150 dollars: False. Three winners will go home winning equal or more than what they put into the tournament. More than 20 other raffle winners will walk away with prizes worth $30-50, making this tournament no different than any other tournament in price. AND most importantly, the price is not the reason we choose to hunt and shoot, it is great memories and experiences we receive together. This tournament is sure to be memorable and there might not be a tournament like this in the next couple of years. What would be better than shooting African targets, with the goal of an African hunt, and not to mention a first class hot meal?

Your odds of winning are great. If you are into statistics here is something to think about. We are planning on a total of 50 shooters, so far we have filled half of the slots….you do the math, your odds of winning something are pretty good. Sprit Ridge had new faces visiting the golf course, Lance Frazer and Alan Murray from The Herald Journal. Making a shout-out on the front page and a two page article on the front of the “Outdoors” section, Spirit Ridge Rifle Golf is famous! We would like to thank Frazer and Murray for taking the time to visit the course and experience the thrill of the sport rifle golf. And don’t worry, we didn’t send them home empty handed. They both had the opportunity to shoot at an antelope at about 400 yards of which they both hit dead-on. Frazer even took a shot at the 1,000 yard target; we won’t say how close (or how far away) he was. The duo ended the morning with a hearty, pulled-pork sandwich, personally prepared by Aaron Dooling. We have a feeling that won’t be their last visit to SRRG, they seemed to have really enjoyed the sport.

Women Tournament 2011

We regret to inform you that the September women tournament, supporting a non-profit group fighting against breast cancer, has been postponed until September 2011. There are many reasons for this postponement. Spirit Ridge wanted to insure that the women tournament would generate enough money to make a worthy donation, and we wanted to give away bigger prizes. With the last minute notice about the tournament, the crew at SRRG made an executive decision to use a whole year to advertise for such a worthwhile tournament.

For all you women who are true Annie Oakly’s, or just enjoy shooting, and for all you men who know these types of women, continue to spread the word about the 2011 women tournament. We want to give the ladies enough time to practice their shot. And, as always, we encourage you ladies to practice before the big day by visiting Spirit Ridge often.

We hope this gives all you women something to look forward to. Now, when your husband goes to the target range to practice his shot for the hunt, you have no reason not to go along with him. Now is the time you need to practice your dead-eye shot as well.

Here is our promise… if you use this whole year to practice your shot to perfection, we promise to have big-talkin’ prizes for the grand champions, and killer raffles you can enter to win. We can’t wait to see you next year at our grand women tournament, where we will give a percentage of the proceeds to a non-profit organization fighting against breast cancer.

African Safari Tournament

This month’s newsletter will sure to turn a few heads offering exquisite tournaments for the next three months!

If you haven’t heard, Spirit Ridge has teamed up with Africa Sport Hunting Safaris. The idea is simple, the tournament theme will be an African safari, the winner of the tournament wins a seven day African Safari hunt with lodging, food and a professional guide included. The winner also gets to bring a companion of choice with him/her. He/she will receive three different tags which include an impala, warthog, steenbuck or duiker. This hunt is worth $8,000! On top of this amazing deal, the winner can purchase a tag for other animals he/she might want to hunt while in Africa.

This tournament will be held on Friday, November 12th and Saturday the 13th. You will be taking aim at African animal targets. Half of the course’s targets will feature African safari animals like lions and cheetahs, while the other half will still include bears, elk and buffalo. For lunch we will feast upon an authentic African meal and will conclude the tournament with a grand prize winner and a raffle.

We are limited in how many shooters we can accomodate. Our goal is to have 45 shooters on each day. Due to the unique nature of the tournament and targets we will not be hosting a masters and classics division. It will be an hybrid of both master and classic shots for one course. No restrictions on optics or weight of rifle. It will truly be an "open" class shoot.

A Good Week Fishing In Alaska

This past week the guys of Spirit Ridge Rifle Golf traded in their high powered rifles in exchange for a spinning rod, a boat and some of the most beautiful scenery known to man. They call it Alaska, the last of the wild frontier. If you have never been you truly are missing out on one of the great outdoor adventures of your lifetime.

Our journey took us to Juneau where we rendezvoused with our good friends from Doc Warner's Fishing Adventures. This was our second trip to Doc's in the last couple of years. We love the atmosphere and the over hospitality that Doc and his staff provide his guests.

Doc Warner's is located just north of Juneau on the Excursion Inlet. It is a main passage for salmon and other species that make their way in from the wide open waters of the gulf of Alaska. The waters are relatively calm and make for great fishing. The landscape is wild and rugged. It is truly a 360 degree view of breath taking vista's. It is not uncommon to see humpback whales breaching just a few yards away from you boat, or a hungry black bear strolling down the shoreline looking for a few salmon to fill it's belly.

We experienced a great week of salmon fishing. We caught mostly pinks but the silvers were definitely starting to show up. Most days we found we would catch our limit on pinks and about 70% of limit of silvers.

Doc Warner's is definitely a family friendly environment. Doc told me it is his mission to create lasting family memories. We definitely came home with plenty of fish but the memories will last forever! Looking forward to another trip in a few years!

Lot's of exiting things are starting to take shape for Spirit Ridge Rifle Golf. One of the more promising developments is the partnership we have formed with Sportsman's Warehouse. The companies have agreed to work together on exposing more people to the sport of long range shooting.

Customers can expect to see several cross promotional items that will enable you to recieve unique discounts at Sportsman's and Spirit Ridge. Next time you are in Sportsman's stop by their gun counter and ask them about some of the offers.

This week Sportsman's Warehouse invited the Sportsman's News crew to come out to Spirit Ridge to film a story on the game of Rifle Golf. The story will be featured in next months edition of the Sportsman's News which is available at the check out stand for only $2.00.

2010 Top Gun Tournament

Congratulations to our finest shooters who qualified and competed for Spirit Ridge’s 2010 Top Gun Tournament. Not only were there excellent prizes won, but a fun-filled weekend of shootin’, eatin’, wheelerin’ and bein’ with the guys!

Spirit Ridge hosted two divisions in the Top Gun Tournament, the “Classics” and the “Masters.” Both groups had to weigh in their guns at no more than 17 pounds and were required to take a “unique” off hand shot.

Friday’s Classic shooters were not allowed to use turret enhanced optics, and shot at targets ranging from 198 yards to 505 yards, with a bonus shot of 1000 yards.

Saturday’s Master shooters were able to take advantage of their dials and shot at targets ranging from 274 yards to 898 yards, with bonus shots of 1000, 1200, 1250, and 1300 yards. The 1300 yard shot had a target no bigger than 8 inches in circumference.

Each shooter was vying for the grand prize, a custom built rifle from Wasatch Precision Arms. The second and third place prizes proved to be valuable as well. Second place won a scope from Vortex Optics, and third place won a $100 gift certificate to Sportsman Warehouse. The same prizes were given both days.

Don't miss our season opener. We will not only tee off our 4th season, we will also tee off our tournament season! Any and all competitors are invited to strut their stuff to see who's the best of the best.

Rifle golf is a new sport designed to help you practice your skills and become a better shooter in a real-life environment as you move from target to target — using an ATV instead of a golf cart! Our unique golf-style scoring system makes the range more competitive and provides a fun way to assess your shooting skills.
Offering ranges from 175 to 1200 yards, our course is designed to mimic real-life hunting experiences for riflemen of all abilities. Our special targets, complete with "vitals", let you know when your shot is dead-on andprovide an unrivaled sense of authenticity.
With more than 30 targets all set at different angles, on different slopes and in varying wind conditions, you'll really come to recognize your strengths and weaknesses as a shooter. Each of our four shooting stations provides unique challenges that will increase your experience and sharpen your abilities.
We'll help you remove all doubts surrounding your ability; you'll be able to understand and expand the limits of your skills. At Spirit Ridge, you'll establish your own reference and confidence — then take it with you into the field where it really counts!
We discourage taking long-range shots in the field without first proving yourself on the course. By reaching and pushing your limits at Spirit Ridge, you'll develop increased accuracy and consistency, making you a more successful and more responsible hunter.
